🍽️ Thoughts on Restrictive Diets
Every year or so, a new diet finds itself in front of a media parade going down main street… one year it’s Keto, the next it’s Paleo, the next it’s Whole 30, the next it’s low-carb, etc…
Some people drop a lot of weight after following these diets, only to put it back on only a few weeks or months after stopping.
Here are my two cents on restrictive diets… in the form of a question.
Do you want to follow a restrictive diet for 10 years?
Probably not. That’s the problem. Our goals are too short-sighted.
Generally, restrictive diets are not long-term solutions. They are far too restrictive on the things your body needs and wants.
Let’s use Keto as an example.
If you’re unfamiliar with Keto and how it works, by following the keto diet you put your body into “ketosis”. This is the state your body is put in when it operates on fat as it’s source of energy.
Your body has three primary sources of energy (carbs/fat/protein), and your body needs all three. But by following Keto, you will have to cut out carb sources your body loves for energy, like bananas, apples, sweet potatoes, carrots, butternut squash, and sourdough bread.
If I were to propose a long-term solution for a diet that would be sustainable for years, here’s what I would do… I would focus on finding whole foods you and your family likes within these 4 main categories:
Animals: the chicken, cow, turkey, eggs, milk, butter, yogurt, deer, etc…
Fruits: apples, berries, tomatoes, peppers, watermelons, peaches, pears, etc…
Roots: sweet potatoes, potatoes, carrots, onions, etc…
Shoots: grains, lettuce, rice, spinach, etc…
Figure out what you like to eat within each of those buckets. And enjoy.
đź“– Jonathan & the Philistines
This is one of my favorite stories in the Old Testament, recorded in 1 Samuel 14.
One day, while the Israelites were hiding and shivering from the size and force of the 30,000 strong Philistine army, Jonathan decided to pick a fight.
Full of courage and faith, he told his armor bearer -
“Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. If may be that the Lord will work for us, for nothing can hinder the Lord from saving by many or by few” - 1 Samuel 14:6.
Jonathan and his faithful companion hiked down to the valley and looked up at the Philistine army, who then saw the two men. The Philistines started taunting them, and asked them to come on up so they can show them “a thing” (1 Samuel 14:12).
They obliged, and Jonathan and his armor-bearer, with their armor and weapons, free soloed the rock face and climbed up to meet the enemy. The two men summited the cliff and began the onslaught.
20 dead Philistines later, the enemy army was in complete panic and confusion.
By the time the rest of the Israelites jump into the battle, the Philistines were busy slaughtering each other, and with that, “the Lord saved Israel that day” (1 Samuel 14:23).
Jonathan considered the impossible odds… and he liked them. He considered his enemy… considered His God… and he decided to hike, climb, and fight with incredible strength and faith.
🏋️ My Favorite Silicone Wedding Band
➡️ SafeRingz
I’ve tried a lot of different silicone bands for exercise, and this one is my favorite, by far.
I’ve worn mine most weeks for about 2 years, and it hasn’t torn yet. This is the only band that has lasted longer than a few months, hasn’t torn, or fallen off my finger after repeated use.
This is an affiliate link and as an Amazon associate I do earn on qualifying purchases. But this silicone band is the best that I’ve found.
